The earth without art is just “eh”

This is one of Lorraine Bromley’s favorite quotes and you can rest assured, as long as she is around we need not worry about “eh.”

Born and raised here in Rhode Island, Lorraine has always been involved in art. She grew up in a creative family and was lucky enough to have motivating teachers who saw her potential.  At Rhode Island College she studied Studio Arts. After graduation, Lorraine spent 30 years as a graphic designer.

Today she is a multifaceted artist, working in watercolor as well as design, printmaking and photography. Her experience in graphic design has aided her in shaping her ideas in to fine art. With an eye for patterns, texture and color she is as adept with a paintbrush as she is with a computer.

Watercolor is her favorite medium. She enjoys seeing what is possible with the blending and layering of colors. Her influences range from contemporary watercolorists like Spencer Crooks to time-honored greats like Monet. Believing that art is a total experience involving body, mind and spirit, Lorraine seeks to create harmony in her work. She says, “ With every creation I discover something new. a new challenge and a new solution. Ever time I approach the blank paper I take a unique journey always unlike the last and never like the next. It is what keeps me coming back to the passion of painting again and again.”

For the pat 10 years Lorrain has spent her winters in an artist’s colony in Costa Rica. There her art has continued to grow as she explores another culture and Costa Rica’s lush rainforest.

Within this rainforest lives a tree with a special seed. The Achiote tree produces a seed that can be ground to a powerful red dye. This dye is often used in lipstick as well as spice blends which give a rich red coloring in Spanish recipes. One day, Lorraine set off into the jungle to find this tree. She hiked though the bush for three hours. Finally, as she approached a rushing river, she saw, in a small clearing, a single beam of sunlight shining on the subject of her quest: the Achiote Tree. The resulting painting, shown below, is titled “The Lipstick Tree.” The red used in this painting was, in fact, from the seeds of the tree.

Lorraine is becoming known in Costa Rica. The Galleria Nacional in San Jose Costa Rica acquired a painting by Lorraine titled “Bamboo Mountains” for their permanent collection.

Lorraine enjoys traveling to other parts of the world. She has conducted workshops for the art traveler in Provence, France and on the island of Crete in Greece.

When she is home in Warwick Rhode Island you can find her busily working in her delightful studio built just for her. Only a year old, the studio sits in a lovely garden along a Narragansett Bay cove. The studio is divided into areas that support Lorraine’s many interests: photography, printmaking, paintings and lettering.

Currently, the studio is bustling with the production of watercolors, prints and drawing in her most recent series of exotic landscapes.

Lorraine is an associate member of the American Watercolor Society as well as the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Wickford Art Association and was a past president.

Lorraine has a painting at the Art League of Rhode Island’s 2014 Elected Artists’ Exhibition at the Attleboro Arts Museum 86 Park Street, Attleboro, MA 02703, September 5 – October 3, 2014 and she has a piece that just won 3rd place at the RI Watercolor Society’s 2014 NE Regional Water media Competition, October 25-November 20
